Evaluation

My media product challenges forms of conventions because it is a surrealist film. By having the unclear storyline and the duplicates in the film. This means that it conflicts with conventional films because it isn’t telling you what is happening in the film it is something that has to be worked out for yourself. There are multiple possibilities that could be happening and you have to choose what best fits in your head to what is going on. So it can be a different viewing experience every time you are watching because of the different scenarios.

The Combination of the ancillary texts and the actual product are the fact that the film poster draws the audience into the main product because they can sort of see what it is about and will question why there are so many of the same person on the film poster.

The film review says a little more about what the product is about this means that it can draw the audience in, but can also deter them because it may be something that they aren’t interested in.

If I was to remake the product I would probably have made it a bit longer to give the “clones” a better effect rather than the 3 scenes where you see them. I would improve it by having more scenes where the character is duplicated. This would mean that the audience would have a better understanding of what is happening during the short film. I might even add more dialogue to the film to give the audience a better understanding of what is currently happening during the film. The camera we used for one of the reshoots was very low quality and caused problems with both the visuals and the sounds due to a crackling. We could of also had a better actor and used more dialogue. I was used for the main actor and I know that I am not that great and could have done a lot better on the camera and directing than I could acting. Being able to choose better locations than the ones chosen for the film such as a store which could make it a lot easier for the layering because we had to have the characters not overlap and this could mean that the duplicates looked more natural standing down different isles in the store.

I used media construction technologies by using Sony Vegas editing software by learning this software I was able to create the duplicate effect by layering. To do layering the camera had to be still so that it did un sync when watching the film.

After the first viewing of the short film we found out that the viewer’s weren’t quite sure what was surreal about the film and we went back to reshoot it to show that the film had duplicates of one person. It was unclear in the classroom scene that all the people in the room were the main character because they all didn’t look up. So we went back to reshoot this scene that meant that all the characters looked up and it gave a much clearer understanding to what is going on in the scene.

After showing it to the viewer’s we also decided to extend the short film to be able to give a better emphasis and to also make it more surreal. The extended version loops the original but replaces the duplicates with duplicates that are dressed the same way that the main character is. This can give the short film a new meaning because the second time around it could all just be in his head or even a dream state.

Short Film Review

This film is a very good art house film. It caters to a very wide audience and could see it being a cult film. This short film is about a boy that wakes up and everyone is him, you watch him from a distance as you follow him throughout the day, experiencing all of the upsets throughout his very short day. The way the short film is shot is just brilliant the directing by Ellis Couch is of the highest standards. The way the film is cut together and the very smart layering effect is truly marvellous. The acting isn’t top rate but it is fine for such a surreal film. It has aspect of John Malkovich and the Director has said he had influence from seeing Un Chien Andalou to create his own short film for himself.

The film takes a very strange turn in the middle of the film, something I won’t spoil for first time viewers. It is debatable of what is happening during the rest of the film. Overall a very good surreal film. Worth 6 minutes of anyone’s time to watch. Defiantly an up and coming Director, editor and Star.

Treatment

The film starts off with a mid shot of the main character. This shot has a duplicate walk into the room and look at the main character in disgust this character is wearing different clothes. After this happens the main character wakes up and looks into the mirror and adjusts what his hair and yawns. He then goes downstairs and into his kitchen where he goes to the cupboard and gets out a glass has a drink and then walks into the hallway puts on his shoes and then leaves his house.

When he leaves his house he walks around the corner and then walks past another duplicate of himself. He turns around in disbelief and just carries on walking. He then turns up at college and walks into the classroom where he as he gets through the door he says “What the Fuck” this showed him to be confused and then it cuts to the shot of 5 of him in different clothes. He then turns around and runs out of the classroom. He then runs home and checking everything as he walks along to his house. He runs into his door opens it and sits down with his back on the front door in disbelief.

The film then starts a repeat of itself the only difference is they are all dressed the same.
